Ethiopia belongs to   the heavily affected countries of Sub-Saharan Africa  by HIV/AIDS, at a  prevalence rate of  2.4%,an estimated of 1,216,908 people  living with HIV/AIDS in 2010,according to the single Point estimate by Federal Ministry of Health and National HIV/AIDS Prevention and Control Office. The average   urban prevalence being 7.7%, is about  eight times greater than the average rural prevalence, which is 0.9%.
According to the same sources, in 2010, an estimated of 210,306 people are living with HIV in Addis Ababa, the prevalence rate  being 9.2%. Besides there were an estimated of 22,214 new HIV infections and 5948 annual deaths in 2009.
There are 70,097 HIV positive people in need of Antiretroviral Treatment

Algerian Donation to Support HIV/AIDS patients in Addis Ababa

Handover of Algeria government donation of 2,500 Tonnes of rice to HIV/AIDS patients in Addis Ababa.

The opening speech conducted first by united Nation World food programme Deputy Country Director Lynne Hiller, said the Algerian Contribution is extremely important to ensure the food security of HIV/AIDS patients.
The main significance of this program is to strength the traditional values of solidarity in African Countries.  We also believe that African people contribute to improve the life of people living with HIV and orphan and vulnerable children, said Abdi-El-Naceur Belaid, the Algerian Ambassador to Ethiopia.

Hearing Disability have been given training on HIV counselling and testing

Training that began at Adama town for 25 non-health professional HIV counsellors in providing HIV counselling and testing for people with hearing disability using sign language  has been completed on  July2010.

AA HAPCO conducted training to traditional medical healers

Addis Ababa HIV/AIDS Prevention and Control Office conducted training to traditional medical practitioners at Adama Pan Afric hotel for five days from May14-19, 2010,in collaboration with CDC Ethiopia. During the opening ceremony the AA HAPCO head Dr. Achamyele Alebachew said HIV/AIDS is still a serious issue in many developing countries including Ethiopia with high prevalence as well as high  rate of new infection. He mentioned that since HIV/AIDS has been known in Ethiopia, many people live with HIV have visited traditional Healers, seeking for cure or relief. Among them are people who have never tested for HIV, but do have illnesses because of the fact that they do have the virus. Others know that they are HIV Positive, and are seeking for solution.

Training on VCT is being given to people with disabilities.

AAHAPCO is conducting an HIV counseling and testing training for sighners with Hearing disabilities, and signers who can hear ,all of whom are selected from Addis Ababa,by the concerted efforts of Ethiopian Federation of People with disabilities,and an association of people with Hearing disabilities in collaboration with JHU-TSEHAI and JEPIEGO Ethiopia.

The annual conference of Addis Ababa HIV/AIDS Council is held on Dec 12, 2009.
During the meeting AAHAPCO Head, Dr. Achamyeleh Alebachew, Presented the 2001 E.C budget year  Report(i.e. July 2008-June 2009G.C) and 2002 E.C budget year plan(i.e. July 2009-June 2010G.C) .
