About AAHAPCO
The Addis Ababa HIV & AIDS Prevention and Control Office (AAHAPCO) was established in January 2001 in order to mobilize multi-sectoral and grassroots efforts in the fight against the HIV & AIDS epidemic.
The problem of HIV & AIDS in Addis Ababa had reached a stage where it required a distinct government office to ensure there was a high level of support available for those organizations and groups tackling HIV & AIDS in the city. We continue to strive to make sure, that as a community, the people of Addis Ababa are equipped to fight against the epidemic within the city.
Vision
To see Addis Ababa free from the risk of HIV infection and the social and economic impact of HIV/AIDS.
Mission
To provide effective and integrated HIV & AIDS prevention and control services to the residents of Addis Ababa by coordinating and building the capacity of Governmental, Non-Governmental, faith and community based organizations implementing HIV & AIDS activities in the city.
Goal
Reduce the spread of HIV infection by sinking the incidence rate from the existing 1.4% to 0.4% by 2011.
Reduce the impact of HIV & AIDS on individuals, families, communities and society by expanding access to appropriate treatment, care and support to 100% of all HIV positive people and their families by 2011.
Objectives
Within the city of Addis Ababa, our objectives are:
To build the capacity of organizations implementing HIV & AIDS activities through technical, financial and other support.
To coordinate and establish a network among organizations working on, and affected by, HIV & AIDS
To monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of different HIV & AIDS prevention and control activities
To mobilize resources for HIV & AIDS prevention and control activities
To work with implementing partners to support and protect individuals, families and communities infected and affected by HIV & AIDS
To work with implementing partners to support vulnerable groups such as women, orphans and young people
To support and encourage HIV & AIDS prevention & control activities
Organizational Structure
AAHAPCO reports to the National HAPCO and to the regional HIV/AIDS Council Chairman, Mayer of the city which is responsible for coordinating HIV & AIDS intervention across the whole of Ethiopia, as well as the Addis Ababa Health Bureau.
We work with HIV & AIDS Prevention and Control Desk Heads at Sub-City level and Health and HIV & AIDS Workers at Kebele level. The Sub-City and Kebele desks coordinate work in their area and make links with local groups and community organizations seeking to undertake HIV & AIDS activities. It is through these desks that we are able to reach and encourage a grassroots response to the HIV & AIDS epidemic in Addis Ababa.
