Since its foundation in 2001 the Addis Ababa HIV/AIDS Prevention and Control Office made some remarkable achievements:
- HIV/AIDS Prevention and Control Office desks have been established in all sub cities
- All kebeles (the lowest level of city administration (203 offices)) found in Addis Ababa have been establishing a Kebele HIV/AIDS Prevention and Control Council. Each council consists of 30 members drawn from different organizations like CBOs and other respected members.
- Support and training was given to HIV/AIDS Prevention and Control councils at all levels (sub city and kebele). As a result the main activities undertaken by the sub cities /kebeles were:
- Awareness creation and sensitization workshops
- Distribution of IEC-materials (information, education and communication)
- Provision of care and support to PLWHA, orphans and their families
- Training of CBOs and others
- About 120 projects from amongst others NGOs,
Anti AIDS clubs, individuals and private organizations were funded
in the past few years. Main areas that were covered by these projects
were:
- Care and support
- Research
- Voluntary Counseling and Testing (VCT)
- Prevention
- Community planning manuals and implementation manuals were prepared by the office
