1/12/2004 World AIDS day 2004
To commemorate World AIDS day 2004 the Addis Ababa HIV/AIDS Prevention
and Control Office organized various activities. The main activity was
an exhibition in Addis Ababa City Hall of more than 40 international and
local, governmental and non-governmental, stakeholders working on HIV/AIDS,
gender and related activities. The inauguration of the exhibition was
preceded by a ceremony with representatives from embassies, UN staffs,
ministries, religious organizations, office heads, the mayor of Addis
Ababa and President Girma of Ethiopia.
During a program with speeches, culture and discussion the vulnerable
position of women and girls (being the central theme of World AIDS day
2004) was brought to attention.
Other programs that were conducted during World AIDS day 2004 in Addis
Abba were tent demonstrations at 5 different sites of Addis Ababa and
a HIV/AIDS program for school children. Besides this the wife of Prime
Minister Meles and United States Ambassador Aurelia Brazeal got themselves
tested at Zewditu Memorial Hospital VCT Center.

8/10/2004 Inauguration Satellite VCT
Centers
To increase the number of people that will learn their status,
AAHAPCO with the help of amongst others CDC established 4
satellite VCT centers. The centers located at premises of
the police, the Anbese city bus enterprise, Addis Ababa University
- College of Commerce and the Education Bureau students health
center operate in close cooperation with the VCT center of
Zewditu Memorial Hospital.

29/5/2004 Start of Home to home community dialogue
campaign
Based on a community program successfully implemented in
Botswana, AAHAPCO introduced a mobilization campaign. About
1000 youngsters were trained to discuss HIV/AIDS and related
issues in their community.

5/5/2004 Launch of VCT campaign
In a joint effort with amongst others FHI a large (media)
campaign to promote Voluntary Counseling and Testing (VCT)
was launched at Addis Ababa City Hall. With billboards placed
through all the city AAHAPCO wants to stress that Addis Ababa
citizens need to know their status.
