CDC     WFP     UNICEF    EMSAP     Global Fund

The Global Fund is an independent, public private partnership designed to attract, manage and disburse resources to fight the global crises of AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria. The Fund's objectives are to: finance effective programs and dramatically increase the global resources to fight these diseases. The Global Fund will help strengthen the national response to HIV/AIDS pandemic by scaling up all strategic interventions and fill important gaps in the implementation.

The fund will be used to meet the following objectives in Addis Ababa:

  • Strengthen and expand VCT services
    • Expansion of the number of VCT centers
    • Training of professionals
    • Distribution of VCT related supplies
    • Promotion of VCT
    • Establishment of referral networks
  • Improve clinical management
    • Training
    • Distribution of supplies for clinical management of HIV/AIDS
  • Improve home based care and support for PLWHA and orphans
    • Training
    • Distribution of home based care supplies
    • Supporting PLWHA and orphans
  • Expand STI syndrome management
    • Training
    • Distribution of supplies & drugs for STI
  • Expand PMTCT Plus services
    • Training of physicians and midwives
    • Distribution of drugs
    • Meetings on PMTCT Plus
  • Increase availability of safe blood
    • Training
  • Improve universal precautions in health facilities
    • Training
    • Distribution of protective materials
    • Purchasing microbiological equipment
  • Increase IEC/BCC and condom promotion
    • Additional printed and electronic media
    • Training
    • Establishment of a resource center

For 2004/2005 some of the targets set are:

  • Opening of 2 new VCT centers
  • Acquisition of 1 new/rented VCT center
  • Renovation of 2 centers
  • Train 10 to 50 counselors
  • Train 400 voluntary home based care providers
  • Expand the care and support (WFP) program to all sub cities and kebeles
