The UNICEF program is a five-year program (starting
in 2002) targeting on 2 main areas: prevention and youth involvement
and care and support for orphans and vulnerable children.
The main objectives of this program in Addis Ababa are:
- To reduce the spread of HIV/AIDS among youth
- To provide integrated community based care and support for children and families infected and affected by HIV/AIDS
- Increase community awareness and reduce stigma and discrimination of HIV/AIDS infected and affected people
The specific targets for 2004/2005 are:
- To promote youth involvement in HIV/AIDS prevention activities
by equipping in- and out school youth with the necessary life
skills that helps them to protect themselves, their peers and
the community at large:
- 298 Anti AIDS Club leaders (42 girls) will be trained in leadership
- 200 youth will be trained in life skills
- 385 house to house educators will be trained
- 5 edutainment programs will be organized
- To promote the importance of establishing or integrating
youth friendly services to properly address their reproductive
health needs:
- 3 small youth centers will be established
- 2 awareness sessions for youth about VCT will be given
- Enhance the community based response in providing comprehensive
care and support for orphans and vulnerable children (OVC):
- Conduct a training on planning, project writing, financial management and M&E for 180 civil society leaders
- Conduct a training on the situation of OVC in Addis Ababa for 300 Ider leaders
