Social Mobilization & Mainstreaming
Social mobilization has been taken as one of the strategic instruments to alleviate the social and economic problems of the society.
The main purpose of this move is to make the people owners and leaders of the efforts to improve the situation in which they live.
Community Conversation (CC) is one component of social Mobilization, which is being conducted in all of the kebeles in the city. It is aimed at engaging the communities in a sustainable dialogue at local level to define their problems and find solutions based on their actual realities. It is expected that communities are engaged in interactive discussions and get deeper understanding about HIV/AIDS and related problems that challenge every member of the society.
It is also aimed at empowering local communities to generate positive behavioral changes at social and individual level to stop the spread of HIV/AIDS. The process involves the interaction of men, women, and the youth, PLWHA, the poor and the rich. It focuses on exploiting traditional, cultural and social values to enhance the capacity of members of the community to handle their own affairs. It emphasizes self-management, self-confidence and integrated community response for sustainable change. As an element of the social mobilization program, the community conversation was examined by the stakeholders at a meeting held from October 7-8, 2006 at Menilik II Secondary School Hall in the capital. The meeting evaluated the activities of Community Conversation groups based on the reports presented by CC facilitators and suggested solutions for further improvements. Various community conversation groups shared experiences and reflected on the issues of common concern. Stakeholders such as Iddirs, media people, PLWHA and various bodies expressed their commitments to work with the communities.
